What the Airline Acronyms Actually Stand For

Posted on February 24 2010 by Tara

In light of the recent/upcoming Lufthansa srtikes where anyone wanting to travel by air is affected to some degree I thought about publishing a lighthearted post on what the airline acronyms stand for. Not what they stand for, but more how they are referred to by rival airlines’ employees and disgruntled travelers.

Alitalia – Aircraft Landed In Tokyo, All Luggage In Anchorage

BEA – Broken Engines Everywhere

BOAC – Better On A Camel

BOEING – Bits Of Engine In Numerous Gardens

DELTA – Don’t Even Leave The Airport

QANTAS – Quarrelsome And Nasty, Try Another Service

SABENA – Such A Bloody Experience, Never Again

SAS – Same As Sabena

TAP – Take Another Plane

TWA – Try Walking Across

There are many variations to the acronyms, but the list includes the most commonly used and accepted versions. Let me know if you think I got one of them wrong, or if you think I should add one to the list.

Happy travels!
